Description
The Red Cockaded Woodpecker, Picoides borealis, is a Federally endangered species that heavily relies on old pine trees (100 years old) to create its nesting cavities. Unfortunately only 3% of the Longleaf Pine Forest that once covered the Southeast still exists. Florida is home to 25% of the Red Cockaded Woodpeckers in the United States with large populations residing in the Apalachicola National Forest and the Withlacoochee State Forest.
