Description
This Cardinal Airplant was seen blooming in the Corkscew Swamp Sanctuary just outside of Naples, Florida. This bromelade is a member of the Pineapple Family The latin name is Tillandsia fasciculata, and fasciculata means "to form into a bundle" referring to there cluster of stiff green spiney leaves Tiny flowers emerge from the yellow tops bracts attracting hummingbirds for pollination with their sweet nectar.
The Cardinal Airplant is a species of the tropics that can be found in swamps and hardwood hammocks from mid Florida south to Central America. This plant is currently on the endangered species list due to decrease of habitat and also from the Mexican Weevil whose larvae kill the plants.
